Do You Need a Bluesky Video Downloader App?

Search for a Bluesky video downloader app and you'll find plenty of options. App stores have a few, and sketchy APK sites have even more. Add browser extensions to the pile and it starts to look like everyone wants you to install something. So it's a fair question: do you actually need to install anything to save videos from Bluesky?

Third, apps go stale. Bluesky only added video posts in September 2024, so every downloader app out there is young and most were built in a hurry. When Bluesky changes how videos are served, an installed app stays broken until its developer ships an update. Some developers never do.

Extensions carry their own risks

A Bluesky video downloader extension sounds safer because it lives in your browser instead of on your phone. In practice, extensions have two problems. The big one is permissions. Most downloader extensions ask to read and change your data on every website you visit, which is a lot of access for a download button. The other problem is churn. Chrome and Firefox pull extensions from their stores all the time, sometimes for policy reasons and sometimes because an extension got sold to a new owner who quietly added tracking. If the one you rely on disappears, you start the search all over again.
